The case interview question he was given was this: A trucking company in China had GM as their main client and had heard rumors that the contract wasn't going to be renewed, the trucking company wanted to know whether to do anything about this.

In 1966, Bruce Henderson and the Boston Consulting Group conducted research for a major semiconductor manufacturer, in which they introduced the concept of the Experience Curve and revealed that unit production costs fell by 20 to 30 percent every time production experience doubled. Henderson’s distinction was a clever conceit, and his trick allowed the Boston Consulting Group to take credit for an idea that had been in circulation for more than 80 years.

The one pattern that DOES exist is that 50% - 70% of the time, the case comes from that consultant’s personal work history at the firm. The reason for this is the good cases (from an interviewer's standpoint) has REAL data gathered by REAL consultants. You know you nail such a case when you basically retrace the consultant's entire analytical process from start to finish. All interviewers are also consultants.
