Software works as a business. Any time someone builds software that works better when others are using it too, the network effect has a chance to kick in. Online, the network effect allows some companies to clear the table, signing up hundreds of millions of users, creating software dynasties. And then, almost always, the software gets lousy. Apple’s software rarely gets significantly improved… Because we don’t have a choice (for now).

The business of software is a bit of a miracle. Properly designed, software isn’t more expensive to create when more people use it. That’s one of the reasons that people hesitate to pay for software. There isn’t a feeling of scarcity, that the store will run out if it’s free… But of course, this overlooks the two-and-a-half essential missing factors: Businesses need money to make the software in the first place.

Removing features to make software simpler doesn''t always make it better. The network effect , combined with the low marginal cost of software, means that there''s a race to have ''everyone'' use a given piece of software. The argument goes that making software powerful rarely pays off, because most users refuse to take the time to learn how to use it well. It''s entirely possible to find great software that isn''t from a huge company.

Writing the first draft of a computer program is easy. It's the testing that separates the professional from a mere hack. Test and then, of course, make it better. The same thing is true with: Restaurant recipes. Essays. Web user interface. Customer service. Management techniques. Licensing agreements. Strategy. Relationships of all kinds. The reason it's so difficult to test and improve is that it requires you to acknowledge that your original plan wasn't perfect.
