What Writers Can Do About Informal Plagiarism, Part 1

Johanna Rothman

I spoke with another writer, Sam, earlier this week. He’s pretty sure a colleague, John, is plagiarizing his blog posts. Not in writing, but in conversation. Yes, John is using Sam's original words and phrases and passing those words off as John's ideas. In videos, podcasts, all kinds of “thought leader” work. This happens. All too often.

I’m happy to provide interviews for both broadcast and print sources. About 99% of them are run by honest, well-intentioned organizations, some of whom have vast networks that help me, and some of whom I’m helping by building their networks. Fine with me. But there’s always a scammer somewhere, under random rocks. Something called “Inside Recent” out of Singapore (I think) writes and asks about an email interview for their vast network.

It was like dropping a match into a puddle of gasoline.

It’s stunning how many people go into consulting who don’t feel comfortable approaching people to offer help. Why else are you here? If you just want to prance on a stage, or direct projects in an organization, or conduct interviews, then you can get a job as a subcontractor who never has to market personally. At Burning Man, the #1 most valuable resource is shade. (Shade?). Remember, Burning Man takes place…. In August. In the Nevada desert. In the middle of a dry lake bed. With temperatures approaching (and exceeding) ~100º F. It gets hot. Shade is life. In 2017, my humble crew went to Burning Man. We brought enough shade stuff to fill a U-Haul, cover ~10,000 square feet, and keep half of the ~65 humans in the camp safe and cool.
