I got a slight edge in the McKinsey recruiting process by accident. The person never returned my call and passed along my consulting resume to the McKinsey recruiting coordinator instead. A resume attached to an in-person conversation or a face is more meaningful than an anonymous resume or CV.

Your goal is not to contact people who can help you in recruiting. My response is networking, if done properly, is never taken as a negative. Very hard to predict.
