A reader sent me an email asking if there was a pattern or trend to what kind of case problems are given by each firm? So, does BCG give M&A questions while McKinsey gives business cases? My answer is the cases you get are all over the place and there's no pattern that I've ever seen or heard about. The one pattern that DOES exist is that 50% - 70% of the time, the case comes from that consultant’s personal work history at the firm.

M&A case framework. Firms typically look at four areas when working on M&A cases. The first area consultants typically analyze in M&A cases is the market. Can the buyer easily finance the acquisition? It is almost impossible to cover all these aspects in a 30-60 minutes case interview. I had gotten similar advice from others, specifically as it related to entering a career in the prestige-obsessed industry of finance and investment banking.
