When I first started recruiting for consulting jobs, an interviewer at Bain shared a story (arguably a legend at this point) about how Bain (or it might have been McKinsey) was asked to advise Motorola on whether or not they should enter the mobile phone market. This would be a textbook strategy created by McKinsey, Bain or BCG.

Researching early is key so that you are well informed before the application windows open, especially as many firms recruit on a rolling basis. The main ones to consider are: Big Three: BCG, McKinsey and Bain. Not only do they differ in size, specialty, and structure but their application processes and deadlines differ too.

So I’ve had first-round interviews for McKinsey and Bain here in London, as well as PWC, EY, KPMG, Deloitte, as well as Booz and Monitor, which they don’t exist anymore. I think out of the four firms, I think I only had one case interview, which happened to be at Deloitte. Jenny Rae: But you succeeded at Bain.

After this, the case closing is the same no matter which type of interview you are in. It used to be that the 3 top firms (McKinsey, Bain and BCG) would be looking for different skill sets and styles from their interviewees. Where to expect what: Interviewee Led: Bain. Monitor/Deloitte. Interviewer Led: McKinsey. Capital One.
