I just came across an interesting blog post by Stephen Monrad with title of " Can non-profit organizations meet all the needs for-profit businesses currently meet? " at least, nonprofits receive their tax-exempt status - 501(c)(3) - from the IRS. For example, I'm aware of a catering company that is a tax-exempt nonprofit.

Senate bill could spur charitable giving

New legislation, recently introduced in the Senate, would create tax-free "personal philanthropy accounts" to encourage pre-tax charitable giving. By making these deductions "pre-tax," it increases the employee's take-home pay (compared to making the donation after-tax) by reducing the amount on which taxes are calculated.
