A candidate might spend hours on their resume and cover letter but put little thought into their LinkedIn profile other than a profile picture and a cheesy blurb in the “about” section. For example, my LinkedIn profile highlights my two primary experiences: strategy consulting and international development.

I applied to nine firms, and I had networked heavily with the four major players here in Germany, which are McKinsey, BCG, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants (which are huge here!), I went through workshops offered by these firms and talked to numerous recruiters and consultants. It is a painful experience.

Either your academic credentials or work experiences were not impressive enough (by their standards) or your cover letter didn't stand out enough. The cover letter is very, very, very important. Did I mention the consulting cover letter is very important? Not a single 2nd round.
