If you are transitioning into consulting from school or a job in industry or government, you will likely begin traveling more than ever. Sure, maybe you have gone to a few conferences or travelled to your company’s annual meeting, but once you begin a consulting career you will be on the road much more frequently than before.

Having had about a year on the new job, I want to highlight the benefits of this transition to give the many consultants out there some perspective. However, staying in consulting means committing more time to the consulting lifestyle with the intense hours, frequent travel, and other consulting stressors. In terms of career planning, going to industry means taking a big step towards focusing one’s career in a focused industry area with a particular company.

Throughout the consulting career recruiting process, I found it memorable that in both informal conversations and formal presentations, the issue of personal life management did occur as a poignant topic of conversation. She just naturally hates talking on the phone and prefers meeting up in person, so we will have to work out a solution.
