As a former consulting resume and cover letter reader for McKinsey, and someone who has reviewed thousands of applications, I have noticed an interesting trend. Most cover letters stink, and many resumes emphasize the wrong things. Most people obsess over resume format -- what font size, margins, etc.

A recommendation from a consultant will fast-track your application inside the firm, and in fact will take it through an entirely different path, virtually guaranteeing you a first-round interview invite. You know how important your resume is in getting your foot in the door for an interview. Don’t give them a reason to say no!

I probably put in over 100 hours preparing , and only about 80 of those were for the case, I believe those additional 20 hours of prep for the experience portions helped put me over the top when competing with other candidates from more target schools. Basically, to get interviews, network, network and then network some more.
