Many professionals would love to do more speaking at conferences and conventions. But when the invitation comes, they’re often paralyzed by money: Is it appropriate to ask for some? And if so, how much?
How Much Should You Charge for a Speech?
Public speaking engagements are an exciting opportunity for many professionals. But when it comes time to discuss payment, it can be difficult to know where to start. The author, an experienced keynote speaker who delivers dozens of paid talks every year, offers three suggestions to help guide anyone through the process of determining whether to ask for money (and how much to ask for if you do). First, it never hurts to ask — you seldom lose anything by simply inquiring about budget. Second, gather key information about the event to help determine what sort of price range might be reasonable. Finally, think through when and where you might be willing to speak for free. There’s nothing wrong with a free engagement, as long as you’re clear on why you’re doing it. Ultimately, it’s all about understanding industry norms, and not being afraid to ask for what you know you’re worth.
