Scientists often consider their work and their institutions unbiased. After all, scientists rely on a rigorous set of experiments to test hypotheses and arrive at conclusions that inform what the rest of us know to be facts in the world.
White Coats, Black Scientists
How scientific institutions can address systemic racism.
September 23, 2020
Summary.
What can scientists and scientific institutions do to address and change longstanding racial biases? First, they must connect past and present forms of racism in science; while the Tuskegee Syphilis Study may seem like the past, for example, the idea that Black bodies are expendable in pursuit of research continues to this day. Second, they must examine racism in scientific institutions, ranging from education to scientific journals. Third, they must dismantle systemic racism in companies and institutions, with important roles for lab directors, principle investigators, editors, hiring managers, and non-Black scientists.
