Basically, you’re learning how to play the game called work. Welcome to New Here. I’m Elainy Mata. I’m a producer at the Harvard Business Review. You might’ve seen my articles on imposter syndrome or my videos about job hunting on our website. In our first season, we’re focusing on those big firsts that happen early in your career, the tough moments you’re not always prepared for, like your first bad boss, or when you’re not sure how to push back on a totally unreasonable deadline. SHO DEWAN: I don’t believe in being authentic in an interview.
ELAINY MATA: What?
SHO DEWAN: Because you know why?
ELAINY MATA: Why?
SHO DEWAN: The employer is not authentic.
ELAINY MATA: People you know and love. You quit, which is brave as hell. Good for you, congratulations. Are you scared of anything?
JEMMA SBEG: Oh my gosh, yes.
ELAINY MATA: The people who help me figure stuff out.
ANITA SEN: How many times did you hear, “You can ask me the same question 50 times.”
Elainy Mata: I know. I know. I’d rather you –
ANITA SEN: I’d rather you ask me the same question 50 times than do it incorrectly.
ELAINY MATA: – than do it wrong, yeah. Especially with the printer. And each other.
DUSTIN BRADY: You got to go through the experience of having those uncomfortable feelings and conversations to get better at them. And like Elainy said that she has failed many times with things and had to learn
ELAINY MATA: 100.
DUSTIN BRADY: And that’s the only way we learn.
CHEYENNE PATERSON: Yeah.
ELAINY MATA: Yeah.
JHYMON MOODIE: Not only, because I mean, we can go through things, but not only to go through them, but to not shut them out as well.
