What to Do If an Employer Asks You to Do a “Job Audition”
Job auditions have become a typical part of the hiring process for employers as part of the applicant vetting process. They will often ask candidates to work on or complete a project, to show what they can do. But candidates are often wary of these projects, since it seems like the company is asking them to work for free, or may even steal their best ideas. If you’re asked to complete a job audition, consider how much time you are being asked to spend. Two hours or less is OK; more than that is unfair. If a project will take longer than that, you can try to negotiate for pay, essentially treating it as a freelance gig. Another consideration: what will you learn? Some projects give you important insight into the company, letting you know if this is the right place for you.
