If you want to reach more people, if you're measuring audience size, then the mantra of the last twenty years has been simple: make it dumber. Don't make people uncomfortable or ask them to stretch. While this downward cycle of dumb continues to be passed from hand to hand, a few people headed in the other direction.

Often, the peer pressure pushes people to fit in, to go along, to become a bystander. Some corners of the internet are getting coarser, crueler and dumber. By surrounding you with people intent on leveling up, we normalize the idea that it’s possible to create better outcomes. Digital peer pressure can push us to level up.

Unless they're a main character in Dumb and Dumber , it's doubtful. We can assume that, generally, people have good intentions and motivations that are similar to ours. Interrupting people or failing to get work done on time are behaviors, and people respond better when we can drill down to the things that can be seen or heard.

It’s this addiction to social that makes the web dumber. It was Google’s decision to send people away from the site (compared to Yahoo, which decided to keep people on the site) that led Google’s growth. If you want tonnage, lower your standards. For the first ten years of the web, the answer was obvious.
