Time Is On My Side

Time Is On My Side

There are three key approaches to creating more discretionary time for yourself and decreasing labor intensity:

  1. Streamline your models. You may have been doing something extremely well for years with excellent results, but that’s no reason not to try to improve it. Reduce the number of meetings or sessions; reduce the duration of meetings; move from in person to remote; eliminate guest speakers and commenters; reduce the number of exercises; educate the client differently about how often you’ll be present; don’t accept arbitrary time frames (instead of 90 days of coaching, coach until the behavior is improved as desired).
  2. Delegate work to the client’s people. Tell the client that this enhances their ability to perform even better in the future and creates internal capabilities. Stress that you’ll need the best people for this, not whoever is available. Those best people will have to be freed up to implement the project.
  3. Subcontract. Use excellent people consistently so that you can rely on them and have their priority time. Never do failure work for them if they don’t perform well, and be careful about whom you hire. If they don’t follow your guidelines and meet your standards, get rid of them.

Everyone I’ve ever coached can usually do two of these three and often all three. You can always make another dollar but you can’t make another minute.
