60 Seconds of Johanna’s WIP for February 5, 2024

This week's 60 seconds is from a thriller short story I sold to Thriller Magazine.

The transcript:

I’m Johanna Rothman, and this is 60 Seconds of Johanna’s WIP for February 2, 2024, where I read an excerpt of just a minute of some writing in progress.

This excerpt is from my story in Thrill Ride magazine, which will be published later this year. Since it’s not yet published, I’m declaring this in progress. See the link below to support the Kickstarter.

Cracking her gum in time to the swish-swish of the windshield wipers, Leah Thomas held her hands above the steering wheel as it jerked from left to right and back again. Just as the small autonomous SUV struggled, lurching from left to right and back again. All to maintain its progress as it found its way through the narrow and winding snow and ice-covered Chelsea, Massachusetts streets.

At just past four in the morning, the mid-February snow fell silently. But the snow tires—thank goodness—crunched over the previous twelve hours of snow, ice, and who knew what else on the roads. Leah liked her job as a test driver.

Most of the time that job was the equivalent of babysitting even in sun, rain, or the dead of night.

Not today. She was way too nervous now, especially with new firmware and new software doing the driving in a nor’easter. Her nerves were tight especially with a virtually new car in the dark with snow coming down at almost an inch an hour.
