Greece Played Germany Like a Violin; Horrified Syriza Demands 'Icelandic' Default

MishTalk

A time-based analysis of eurozone taxpayer liabilities shows the Greek game-masters played German creditors like a violin. What got me thinking about this in detail was a recent statement by Financial Times writer Wolfgang Münchau that France and Germany stand to forfeit €160 billion if Greece defaults. Should You Point Out Why the Prospect Won’t Succeed?

David A Fields

A consultant sent me the following question in an email: You mentioned that one approach to dealing with a prospect who decides to go the Do It Yourself route is to clarify what success looks like. When I was in this situation recently I felt like I was doing the prospect a disservice, because they won’t succeed. What about asking some more pointed questions that highlight their mistake.

Approaching the Guesstimate Question

Tom Spencer

(Source: Flickr ). A guesstimate question can be approached by breaking a question down into smaller pieces by asking the interviewer questions and making a series of narrowing assumptions. You can break a question down either by starting big (e.g. making an assumption about the total population) or starting small (e.g. making assumptions about the average household or some other piece of the whole and then extrapolating).

How Should You Price Loosely Defined Projects?

David A Fields

A consultant asked me the following question: I often do work that is difficult to scope at the outset. I get the value (no pun intended) in the pricing structures you recommend, but in my circumstance a fixed price seems very risky. What’s the best way to package and price my services? What advice would you give this consultant? Do you face a similar situation and, if so, how do you price your offering?

This week’s reflection point: I remember going through some old photo albums several years ago when my young son, astonished by viewing the black and white photos, said: “when did the world turn colorful?” Cute and innocent as it may sound, it made me realize that we often take our technology and innovation for granted. Just think about it.

Ownership vs Control

On Thursday, the Guardian reported that James Murdoch will succeed Rupert Murdoch as CEO at 21st Century Fox. At the same time, Rupert and Lachlan will become executive co-chairmen. The interesting thing about the Murdoch family’s control of Fox is that it relies on a dual-voting structure in which the family has nearly 40% of the voting power but only owns about 12% of the shares.

The rest of us, though, are rewarded for breaking things. Our job, the reason we have time to read blogs at work or go to conferences or write memos is that our organization believes that just maybe, we'll find and share a new idea, or maybe (continuing a run on sentence) we'll invent something important, find a resour

You snap a photo, then show the app the corners of the document, and it automatically straightens it out. Then you can convert to b/w or greyscale if wanted, and also increase contrast automatically. You can scan multiple pages and put them together in a document and send it out as PDF.
