The Five Defenses Against Large Consulting Firms

David A Fields

Let’s face it, many reasons we say a client should hire us instead of a large consulting firm don’t hold water. We’re smart; they’re smart too. We’re responsive; their project teams are responsive. We’re experienced; they’re experienced. We sing Christmas carols in the shower; they sing Christmas carols in the shower, in harmony. Maybe. I’m not sure about that last one.

Are Japanese businesses the bad boyfriends of the consulting world?

The Source

Japanese clients are a hard bunch to win over. Consulting has never taken off in that market nearly to the extent it has in other major economies, and consultants we spoke with estimate that only about half of the businesses they’d expect to be buying consulting actually are. It’s a culture that doesn’t think much of investing in intangibles like advice, and while interest is definitely picking up, this is a market that has a long way to go if consulting is ever to become the norm.

Should You Scope a Consulting Project or Sell an Assessment?

David A Fields

A consultant raised the following concern to me: You’ve advised selling an assessment project when it’s not immediately clear how much work a project might take. But I’m still not sure when I should sell an assessment project and when I should just help them figure out the scope as part of the process of winning an engagement. What advice would you give this consultant?

Volatile Stock Market & Business Buy-Sell

Martinka Consulting

For the last nine to 12 months I’ve been writing and saying business owners have their heads in the sand. One of my common lines is business owners think, “Recession, what recession? These good times won’t end.”. Now I don’t think the economy is in big trouble but the stock market’s violent correction is sure to spook some people (especially those who bought high and panicked, selling low).

The paradox of popular

Seth Godin Blog

Most things are liked because they're popular. I know that seems to be a redundancy, but it's worth decoding. Pop music, for example, is a must-listen among certain populations because that's what "everyone else" is listening to, and being in sync is the primary benefit on offer. The paradox, of course, is that you have to walk through a huge valley of unpopular before you arrive at the population that will embrace you because that's the thing to do.
