The Great Disconnect

Chad Barr

Photo by: Chad Barr. I’ve been talking recently about looking at things we know through a new lens and a different vantage point. I’ve had the great opportunity this last two weeks to explore through my multiple camera lenses the vast expanses of the west, namely, Utah. Sunsets, and sunrises, leaves deepening colors, desert, arches and a search for the Milky Way in the vast horizon and night sky.

It’s Always the Little (Unseen) Things

Martinka Consulting

We had a perplexing problem with one of our garage door openers, as in it wouldn’t close, which usually means the safety beam is out of whack. My friend and I tried all kinds of stuff after trying to move the sensors in case they were out of line. So I cleaned out the lenses with a wet Q-tip, and it worked. Then it didn’t, cleaned it again, it works, doesn’t work, repeat, etc.

Greetings from Anaheim, CA. I’m at the ASA Advanced BV conference while my wife is holding down the RV in Grand Junction, CO. The temps are getting cool, and we will soon be heading south to Big Bend, TX where we will be spending the first half of winter. Since I last wrote, I did two short videos … the first one was about getting a jumpstart on planning where you will show up in 2019 (writing and speaking) and the second one revealed my best prospect pick up line (I just want to date you, not g

Why Leaders Need to Cultivate Complementary Strengths

Harvard Business

Grove Pashley/Getty Images. Robert is a strong leader. How do I know? When he left one company to join another, many in his top team followed him to the new company because they wanted to keep working for him. That’s a pretty strong testimonial. “Yes, he pushes us hard,” one of his direct reports told me, “but I work harder and I deliver.

The Problem with Using “I Statements” at Work

Harvard Business

George Diebold/Getty Images. It has become common advice for businesspeople to use “ I statements ” — such as, “I feel frustrated that you missed the budget deadline twice” — as a way to raise challenging conversations without causing colleagues to feel blamed or under attack. Indeed, I statements may be helpful during situations in which you have a close personal relationship to a colleague who cares about your well-being, or when you want to show that a part

Podcasting is the new blogging

Seth Godin Blog

Not as a way to make big dollars (blogging didn’t do that either). But as a way to share your ideas, to lead your community, to earn trust. Podcasting is a proven technology that is still in its infancy. It’s an open mic, a chance for people with something to say to find a few people (or perhaps more than a few people) who’d like to hear them say it.

How Amazon’s Higher Wages Could Increase Productivity

Harvard Business

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images. Amazon recently made headlines by announcing that it would voluntarily increase its minimum hourly wage to $15. With a federal minimum wage of only $7.25, this pledge might seem like a curious decision — especially for a company as laser-focused on cost containment as Amazon. But thinking only about the costs involved in raising wages misses a key issue: pay hikes can also boost workplace productivity.

Using Behavioral Nudges to Treat Diabetes

Harvard Business

Nicolas Vallejos Photography and Design/Getty Images. Health care practitioners and payer organizations increasingly use big data to overcome what might be called a “flaw of averages” in traditional medicine: a treatment that has been tested at a population level might in fact work better for some individuals than others. The goal of precision medicine is therefore to identify treatments appropriate to an individual — rather than a population — based on granular genotype

The Problem of Visibility for Women in Engineering, and How They Manage It

Harvard Business

Peter Cade/Getty Images. Women engineers have a visibility problem. Like women in other ultra-masculine sectors, they are often excessively visible as women, but overlooked when it comes to their technical expertise. This paradox gets in the way of forming relationships at work and hurts their advancement. We wanted to know how women deal with this.

3 Ways to Build a Data-Driven Team

Harvard Business

Inti St Clair/Getty Images. It is no doubt a sign of progress that a significant proportion of organizations and managers today appear to feel guilty when they admit that they are making big management decisions in an intuitive rather than evidence-based way. Indeed, being data-driven has joined the ranks of “innovative”, “diverse”, and “socially responsible” as the one of most laudable features of organizational culture, at least if we go by company websites.

How Capitec Became South Africa’s Biggest Bank

Harvard Business

ShutterWorx/Getty Images. The consumer banking industry is notoriously difficult to enter, not least because most customers rarely switch banks. In some countries, people change spouses more often than they change banks.
