5 Ways AI is Changing the Consulting Landscape

Within the competitive world of consulting, staying ahead of the curve is vital. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a transformative force that is reshaping the way consultants deliver insights and value to clients.

Some examples of AI automation tools include ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Fireflies.

AI-powered tools can enable management consultants to analyse vast data sets, automate time-consuming tasks, forecast a range of future business scenarios, provide personalised recommendations, and offer 24/7 availability to clients.

1. Data Analysis

AI can rapidly equip consultants with accurate data-driven insights. Before the advent of AI-powered tools, people used to talk about ‘big data analytics’, now they just talk about AI. That is because AI can empower consultants to quickly analyze vast amounts of data and to identify patterns and insights that would be impossible for humans to detect on their own.

For example, AI can be used to analyze customer data and identify key trends and patterns, or to analyze supply chain data to optimize logistics and reduce costs. This can allow clients to identify key industry trends in real-time.

Any business that does not harness the power of these AI-tools will likely find themselves quickly falling behind.

2. Automation

AI provides consultants with an opportunity to automate many time consuming tasks, such as collecting and analysing data, generating reports, and creating presentations.

For example, one consulting firm used AI to automate document review, which reduced the time needed for this task by 60%. AI tools can also be used to automatically generate visually appealing PowerPoint slides, and seamlessly incorporate charts, graphs, and key findings.

This kind of time saving can free up consultants to focus on more strategic and value-added activities, such as communicating with clients, developing solutions to complex business challenges, and crafting a compelling narrative that acts as a catalyst for change within the client organisation.

In other words, AI-powered automation can enable consultants to leverage their human strengths in communication, creative problem solving, and persuasion.

AI powered automation also offers the potential to reduce the cost structure of consulting firms by significantly reducing the marginal cost of providing consulting solutions. Once the initial investment in AI-powered tools has been made, consulting firms will be able to provide more value to clients with fewer consultants, thus allowing consulting firms to provide more affordable and higher quality services to businesses of all sizes.

3. Making Predictions

The predictive power of AI is a game-changer for consultants. By sifting through historical data and discerning patterns in large datasets, AI can forecast future scenarios with remarkable precision. Consultants can utilize this capability to help businesses prepare for various outcomes and make strategic decisions, such as optimizing supply chains, predicting customer preferences, or identifying key market trends.

Predictive analytics algorithms can even lead to insights that might not be immediately apparent to human analysts. For example, a consulting firm could use AI to analyze a supermarket’s supply chain, identify inefficiencies, and rapidly identify potential improvements such as consolidation of suppliers, backwards vertical integration, re-organising methods of transportation, or optimising inventory management systems.

4. Personalizing Recommendations

AI’s capacity to provide personalized recommendations is invaluable to consultants. For example, a consulting firm could use an AI-powered tool to analyze customer data to identify patterns, segment the market, and create personalized marketing messages for different groups.

5. Providing 24/7 Availability

AI can make consulting services more responsive by ensuring expertise is accessible whenever it’s required. Virtual assistants and chatbots can respond to queries, provide information, and engage in seamless communication with team members and clients at any hour. Tools like AI-powered virtual whiteboards and project management platforms can also help remote global teams work together more efficiently. This round-the-clock availability offers significant advantages in a a fast-paced and ever-evolving business landscape.

The bottom line

AI is having a significant impact on the management consulting industry. AI-powered tools are helping consultants to provide more data-driven, precise, and personalized recommendations, automate time-consuming tasks, make more informed decisions, and offer cost-effective solutions with 24/7 availability.

While AI-tools may reduce the overall number of consultants needed to complete a single project, it is unlikely to reduce the overall demand for consultants. Since AI-tools will empower consultants to provide more value to clients, often at lower cost, it will most likely increase the overall demand for consulting services.

If consultants know how to leverage AI effectively, it can be an incredible resource to free them up from time-consuming activities, allowing them to focus on higher-value work, such as listening to clients, problem-solving, crafting powerful narratives, and making strategic decisions.
