Orange Cones and Hard Hats Are for Construction Sites Not Websites Raising the Barr Weekly Memo: Issue 455

One of my pet peeves is web pages or sites that say they are “Under Construction.” I am astounded that even in 2021 I still come across this message and noticed that some have it displayed on their site for years!

Have you ever seen this message displayed on Amazon, Apple, IBM or Microsoft? Of course not! What does that really say about your business? To me, it is a terrible reflection of your business and your brand and the likelihood of your customers returning to visit your site is close to none.

I first wrote about this 13 years ago in my article Under Construction / Coming Soon – Who Are You Kidding? In addition to the points I shared in this article I would add that having such a message demonstrates:

  1. Laziness
  2. Procrastination
  3. Disorganization
  4. Negligence
  5. Incompleteness

The only exception to this is when you know exactly when the site or page will launch and use it as an invitation or a teaser to attract your visitors to show up on the specific date.

The Barbra Streisand song, Putting It Together, exemplifies what needs to be done to transform the under construction to a work of art:

Bit by bit, putting it together
Piece by piece, only way to make a work of art
Every moment makes a contribution
Every little detail plays a part
Having just a vision’s no solution
Everything depends on execution
Putting it together, that’s what counts!
