60 Seconds of Johanna’s WIP for January 18, 2024

I've been in a fiction writing workshop all week, so it makes sense to offer you an excerpt from a piece of short fiction.

Transcript:

I’m Johanna Rothman, and this is 60 Seconds of Johanna’s WIP for January 18, 2024, where I read an excerpt of just a minute of some writing in progress.

This excerpt is from an unusual Valentine’s Day story.

There’s nothing wrong with passion. I love it. (Yes, pun intended.) But not everyone deserves their Cupid.

That’s where I come in. I’m not the god of passionate love. I’m Cindi, the anti-Cupid. I’m the one who removes those love arrows of uncontrollable desire.

For Love’s sake, why would anyone want uncontrollable desire? Why wouldn’t they want a more controlled life with controlled desire?

That’s what happened last Saturday in the Local Pharmacy in my little burg of Arlington, Massachusetts. Yes, the place where the main drag, aka Massachusetts Avenue, is the home to more funeral homes and nail salons than any good restaurants.

The Local Pharmacy took over one of those huge chain stores, which is great. Except they kept the music service. The kind of music that simultaneously blares and puts people to sleep. I kid you not. I don’t know how the music does this, but I found a senior citizen snoring while waiting for his prescription.
