The Transcript:

I’m Johanna Rothman, and this is 60 Seconds of Johanna’s Writing WIP for April 5, 2024, where I read an excerpt of just a minute of some writing in progress.

This excerpt is from the speaking book.

After the little giggles or murmurs in response to that story, I ask people to put their hands up if they're supposed to multitask between at least two projects. Then I say, “When I get to your maximum number of projects, put your hand down.” I increase the number of projects by one and remind people to put their hands down once I reach their maximum.

One time, I got to seven projects and two people's hands were still up. I asked, “Do the two of you happen to work in the same company?”

“Yes,” they said.

“And all of your projects are late?”

I asked a few more questions, and one person said, “You're a mind reader.”

I smiled and said, “I wish. But there are consequences for a lot of multitasking, and now you've heard many of them.”

That's when I said, “You don't have to work that way.” That was my promise to them, the vision of the future.

My audience knew that even if they couldn't use all my advice, they could try some of it. They were ready to listen.

The Video

And, so I don't have to remember, here's the video.
