I’m Johanna Rothman, and this is 60 Seconds of Johanna’s WIP for November 2, 2023, where I read an excerpt of just a minute of some writing in progress.
This excerpt is from a science fiction short story, which does not yet have a title.
Hope Easton didn’t really mind posing a steward on the Shining Star, on the way to Mars. After all, she was in space. Real space, not just a shuttle flight between Earth and the moon, but real space, between planets. Just like she’d dreamed about as a little girl. And, because she was undercover, she knew this job wasn’t forever.
Watching the stars, their blues, pinks, and reds sparkling past her window, she wondered how she was going to stop the music-madness from infecting this cruise. The cruise company thought a passenger—or a crew person—was hypnotizing people. Or, something like that.
Hope wasn’t sure. Mass hypnosis? In space? Come on.
But the client was almost always right, which is why she sat at her desk, interrogating her computer, searching through this ship’s logs from the previous two cruises.
