Job Hub: Chick-Fil-A Jobs and Culture

Today we highlight tremendous business analyst and post-consulting leadership jobs at Chick-Fil-A. Chick-Fil-A is the Georgia-based privately held and family owned company credited with pioneering the establishment of restaurants in shopping malls.

Since its inception, this company – with over 1,850 locations in 41 states and Washington, D.C. – has grown to be the largest quick-service chicken restaurant in the United States based on domestic annual sales. Despite its role in certain controversial positions based on its faith-grounded heritage, Chick-Fil-A has 46 consecutive years of positive sales growth and annual sales in 2013 of over $5B and has truly set itself apart by pioneering innovations and delicious products.

Enjoy!

Chick-Fil-A History & Culture

Founded and headquartered out of Atlanta, Georgia, Chick-Fil-A is a trusted community restaurant where people from all walks of life gather to enjoy family, friends and great food. The company is known for espousing Christian values, which has both engendered a loyal following and sparked intense controversy in recent years. The most famous of its values is its weekly Sabbath, or closing every Sunday. Though this decommissions 1/7 of the firm’s operating days, it has done nothing to harm Chick-Fil-A’s growth, with the company continuing to post impressive same-store-sales numbers over multiple consecutive years.

Chick-Fil-A’s history can be traced all the way back to 1946, when founder Truett Cathy decided to open up his first restaurant, known as the Dwarf Grill (now the Dwarf House) in Hapeville, GA. Though the Dwarf Grill experienced moderate success, it was what happened 15 years later, in 1961, that helped to define the company and put them on the map.

In 1961, Cathy found a pressure-fryer that could cook the chicken sandwich in the same amount of time it took to cook a fast-food hamburger. Following this discovery, he registered the name Chick-Fil-A, Inc. and the rest is history. In case you were wondering, the company’s current trademarked slogan, “We Didn’t Invent the Chicken, Just the Chicken Sandwich,” does indeed refer to their flagship menu-item, the Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich.

Changing the Chicken Industry

Led by the S. Truett Cathy’s son, Dan Cathy, Chick-Fil-A has been changing the way the fast food quick-service industry does business. Chick-Fil-A is on a mission to bring world class service to every person that it comes into contact with; from its financial success, it certainly seems that they are doing just that.

Chick-Fil-A goes to infinity and beyond when it comes to offering benefits to their employees. Okay – that’s an exaggeration, but they don’t just offer traditional benefits like PTO. Chick-Fil-A takes it to the next level by making traditional benefits some of the most extraordinary in the industry. Expect to be treated like family and taken care of by this company because from day 1, you get to feast at the family table.

We’re talking about the basics like 100% employer paid health, medical, and dental insurance, but also fun stuff like an onsite gym and fitness center, free healthy meals prepared by an on-site crew of chefs in their corporate cafeteria, subsidized daycare, employee scholarships, and, of course, major restaurant discounts.

Chick-Fil-A Interview Tips & Tricks

Chick-Fil-A didn’t become a game changer by following the pack. In fact, the only reason they are where they are now – and not just another failed restaurant – is because they decided to stand for what was important to them as a company and pursue a path many believed was impossible that would not succeed because it was too costly. Instead of being a follower, Chick-Fil-A chose to be a leader by making decisions to care for, engage with, and listen to their customers and employees.

Like Chick-Fil-A’s founder S. Truett Cathy, the Chick-Fil-A team is made up of people who want to have a positive effect on the people in their environment. Sound like you? If so, you may be in luck; Chick-Fil-A is looking for individuals who are passionate about what they do and about changing the world for the better (while having lots of fun in the process). With Chick-Fil-A, the typical application can be completed in as little as 45 minutes, but be prepared to do some killer networking if you want to give yourself a good chance to land an interview.

Preparing for the Interview

You need to be prepared when interviewing with Chick-Fil-A, because the questions that you will receive are both behavioral, like “Why do you want to work for Chick-Fil-A?” or “What do you do in your spare time?” and experiential (Context, Action, Result) like “What was the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?” and “When was the last time you helped someone?” Focus on creative answers and be prepared to tell vivid stories that highlight teamwork, leadership and innovation.
The typical hiring process from application to offer is typically very extensive, but it can vary largely, depending upon the position you are applying for. In fact, you can expect the timeline to take anywhere from 2 – 12+ weeks. After submitting your initial application, with your resume/CV, cover letter, finished assessments and other supporting documents, HR will typically respond to your application within a week or two.

Applying to Chic-Fil-A

After submitting your application, if you are approved to move onto the next phase HR will follow up with you by sending you an e-mail to fill out a more detailed application that includes 5 essay questions relating to your qualifications, like “Why you want to work at Chick-Fil-A?” and “Why are you applying for this position?” Once you get called for an interview, you can bank on at least 7-15 interviews that typically consist of connecting with the recruiter, hiring manager, and associates that you will be working with over a phone screen, a Skype interview, and multiple on-site interviews. Again, depending on the position for which you have applied, the interview process can vary slightly.

Lastly, make sure you know the market value of the position for which you are applying. After you get an offer, even though Chick-Fil-A is known to be pretty fixed and rigid with offers, there is room to negotiate – especially on the incidentals and benefits.

In the interview, Chick-Fil-A takes it to the next level by getting funky. They are known for asking a lot of tough and interesting personal reflection questions like, “Why should I hire you?”, “Why do you want to stop what you are doing and work at Chick-Fil-A?”, “Tell me your life story in 5 minutes like a movie. Give me a title of the movie and the main characters” or “Tell me about your life” – so be prepared with your hero stories! They might drill down on your experiences and role play with you, so don’t go in unprepared.

Chick-Fil-A Hiring

If Chick-Fil-A likes you and feels that you are a great fit, they will do their upmost to find you a position, even if it is not in the original position you applied for. It is all about having the right attitude and willingness to work which will get you hired.
