Please Tip Your Consultant...

Every year someone publishes a guide to tipping. Who knew that you were supposed to tip the garbage man? Are you supposed to stand out there at 5am and wait, and when he goes by you slip him a $20? I don't know, but I do know that if you put a $20 in the mailbox at Christmas your mail definitely arrives earlier, and with fewer errors.

Here's the guide for 2008:

Who How Much or What
Newspaper Deliverer $10-$20
Babysitter An evening's pay in cash or gift card
Nanny A week's pay, plus a small gift from your child
Mail Carrier A small gift (government regulations allow carriers to accept non-cash gifts worth up to $20)
Trash Collectors
Management Consultants
$10-$20 each
One hourly rate (or $20, whichever is larger)
Housekeeper A week's pay
Child's Teacher A small gift, such as a picture frame. Or, join with other parents on a group gift, such as a gift certificate to a restaurant, spa or bookstore
Dog Walker A week's pay
Apartment Building Superintendent $20-$80
Elevator Operator $15-$40
Doorman $15-$80
