4 Ways Cloud Computing Impacts Business Success

Cloud computing is basically network computing conducted on a large scale. The process is heavily reliant on servers that are distributed across the globe.  These servers can, however, be accessed at any given moment.  The user interface of cloud computing today runs on internet browsers installed on smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktops.  As such, globally distributed cloud computing is able to provide the functionality traditionally associated with a local area network (LAN), but with some additional benefits.

Below we explore 4 ways that cloud computing is having an impact on business success.

1. Faster Communication

Cloud computing technology provides enhanced and affordable business communication. Low cost global communication was in the past only available to multinational corporations.

Faster communication is leveling the playing field between incumbents and startups by allowing firms to migrate towards more decentralized management structures and organizational models. Smaller firms that lack proprietary legacy systems have been willing to embrace these new methods of communication.  One key benefit of doing so is that it is allowing smaller firms to recruit globally and build virtual teams of experts who come together to complete client assignments on a per-project basis.  This means smaller firms can gain greater access to high quality staff while simultaneously avoiding the prohibitive costs of hiring them on a full time basis.

Companies providing cloud technology services have started to capitalize on this trend by providing cost-efficient and dependable tools that enable or support communication.  For example, Slack (team collaboration), Salesforce (customer relationship management), Amazon Web Services (on-demand cloud computing), Dropbox (file sharing), and Zoom (audio and video conferencing).  The new cloud communication tools offer free calling between employees, call screening, do not disturb, parking, blocking, caller ID, and forwarding features. All this has led to on-screen and video communications becoming an integral part of all businesses, regardless of whether they are big or small.

By doing this, they are making it easier for managers to communicate with employees spread out across the globe.  The increasing dependability and speed of cloud-based services also means that personnel can use smartphones and tablets to complete tasks from wherever they are in the world without fearing that they might lose vital company data.

2. Ease of Access

Cloud computing provides easier and faster access to vital business software, and company data from any location with a fast Internet connection.  This is welcome news for professionals as they no longer have to carry special applications and business suite software around with them on a laptop. Instead of carrying the software with them, they can access the software they need from any device that has the capability to run a modern browser.

If their device is stolen or damaged, professionals no longer have to worry about going back to the office, signing for another one, and reconfiguring the software. All they need to do is acquire another device and proceed from where they left off.

3. Secure Collaboration

As with any other software application, business software goes through various upgrade cycles with occasional bug fixes, new features, and security patches.

With cloud computing, the responsibility for upgrading software shifts to the cloud services provider. This makes it easier and more efficient for companies to keep software updated, get technical support, and allow each project team member to focus on creating value for the client rather than tinkering with technology problems.

4. Data Backup

For many businesses, data is one of the most valuable assets.  This is true for fast-moving consumer goods companies like Procter & Gamble or Coca-Cola, consulting firms like McKinsey and law firms like Baker McKenzie. Cloud computing has many uses in a business setting, one of which is “Data Backup”.

Every business owner today knows the importance of ensuring that their company information is properly backed up. Data backups help guarantee that the company will not lose information in the event of a natural disaster or system failure. The cloud has simplified the data backup process by allowing data to automatically update itself as you work and create a copy of the data in an off-site location. This way, a firm’s data will be protected from human errors, system malfunctions, theft, and natural disasters.

Conclusion

In this article, we have explored 4 ways that cloud computing is having an impact on business success. Startups and incumbents alike should explore cloud-based services as a way to increase the speed of communication, improve the access to business information, enhance data security, and protect data from errors and system malfunctions.
