How to Lead Without Authority: Interview with Keith Ferrazzi

By Anthony Taylor - May 26, 2020

Keith Ferrazzi is a two-time New York Times best selling author, Harvard Business School graduate, and the former youngest CMO of a Fortune 500 company at Starlight Hotels. Keith's company, Ferrazzi Greenlight, works with executive leadership teams within some of the largest companies in the country including Verizon, Delta Airlines and General Motors.

On this special video episode of the Strategy & Leadership Podcast, Keith discusses his story of becoming the youngest CMO on the Fortune 500, his new book, Leading Without Authority, and gives advice for young leaders and those trying to move past the COVID-19 transformation.

Some of the topics covered include:

  • 3 key principles needed to lead without authority

Firstly, to lead without authority, leaders must be transformational. Second, they must be extremely adaptable - always willing to pivot and ask where the market it going next. Last, they must learn to co-elevate. Keith coined the term 'co-elevate', which means to get a group of people passionately dedicated to both a common mission and each other.

  • Advice for leaders trying to accomplish a mission

For any leader trying to get something done, Keith explains the importance of inviting people onto your team. Ultimately, when building your team, you must be malleable, willing to co-create, and make it feel like they're joining their own team, rather than yours. Keith also explains the problem with ownership - how it is the enemy of transformation, and how co-creation and co-elevation are key to success.
