The 40 Myth

The 40 myth

The 40 Myth

No, it’s not about turning 40. (We “hit” 50 but “turn” 40 for some reason.) This is about the ridiculous belief that people won’t be as productive remotely as they are in the office.

NO ONE in my entire career has proved to me that they’re putting in 40 productive hours merely by dint of being present in the office. There are as many distractions in the office as at home. And being “busy” is not the same as being productive. So remote workers are not, de facto, less productive than “live” workers.

The key is to have clear and agreed upon results objectives for people to hit. It may be a number of claims processed, or problems resolved or prospects called and documented. It may be actual sales made or costs reduced. It will depend upon the business.

But don’t start with geography. It doesn’t matter where someone is for a given amount of time, what matters is what they produce.
