The Hybrid Organization

The Hybrid Organization

There will inevitably be new, “hybrid” offices evolving. There will be (in US terms) W2 (full time) employees, 1099 (part time) employees, people working from home full time, people working in an office full time, people alternating between both locations, and consultants and subcontractors who come and go by the project. Many people will have their own “benefits package” independent of the organization.

When dogs are mixed (some people call them simply “mutts”) the hybrid that results usually carries the best traits of the parents’ blood lines, and are healthier than purebloods, which are prone, because of inbreeding, to diseases and afflictions. I think the same pertains to organizations.

We’ll see healthier organizations emerge with these more flexible arrangements. But they will require a different kind of management and a different kind of leadership.

If you walk in there, as a consultant or advisor, with the old, fixed ideas of organizational structure, behavior, and dynamics, you’ll have a very fine Hoola Hoop in an environment where everyone is focused on virtual reality.
