Everyone’s A Coach at Times

Everyone’s A Coach at Times

We’ve all been coaches, formally or informally, and we’ve all been coached. I don’t see coaching as a “discipline” that requires a certificate or a certain model.

I think it’s about having a helping heart and the intellect to discover what people need improved by both listening and validating through observation. Then it’s about the commitment and accountability to create the proper changes. This differs from person to person. It has little to do with the coach’s strengths—”Let me tell you how I do this” is not helpful. “Here’s how YOU can do this” is helpful.

And it needs to be short-term to avoid co-dependency (and separate it from, say, trusted advisor status).

When you invoke a magical model and strict regimen, you’re trying to fit a human being into an arbitrary sequence and you’re admitting you don’t have the skills to help someone improve, you can only impose a process.

Good luck with that.
